What Is the Duration of the Stock Market Day?

Opening and closing times of the world’s major stock exchanges

Anyone who trades on any kind of exchange must build their trading strategy based on the interplay of the schedules of global markets. The cycles of a trader’s day are dictated by when different markets open and close, and how their trading sessions overlap.

Here’s a chart of the trading sessions of the top stock markets in local time and GMT+2.

Pre-market and after-hours trading in US markets

You can do business on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq during certain off-hours times - for five and a half hours before opening, and for four hours after closing. This is for those who want to strike the iron of market shifts that happen outside of business hours while it’s hot. It’s not a very liquid period to trade.

If you want to get comfortable with the basics, there’s a course that can help.

The Madrid Stock Exchange

Opening and closing auctions

The Spanish stock market operates in a way that is slightly nuanced from most others. You cannot trade off-hours in Madrid. The opening and closing prices are determined in the half-hour before opening, and for five minutes after closing. During these windows of time, investors enter, modify, or cancel orders, but they cannot execute them. This often shifts the price, and is called the “auction.”

Futures markets

Many futures are tied to oil, metals, and currencies – assets that shift constantly. If you’re invested in those, you need access to your markets all the time. So, the same as NYSE and NASDAQ, futures markets allow you to trade outside of session hours, futures markets are open almost 24 hours a day.

Session overlaps

Periods when two major exchanges are operating simultaneously are especially fertile ground for big price movements.

London and New York overlap from one to five in the afternoon, GMT

Tokyo and London overlap from 8 to 9 in the morning, GMT
